The General Directorate for the Environment and Living Environment (DGECV), through the National Ozone Bureau (BNO), carried out a mission from 25 to 28 August 2026 aimed at developing a national certification system for technicians working in the refrigeration and air-conditioning sector.
The initiative was implemented with the support of an expert from the Associazione Tecnici del Freddo (ATF), recruited by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). It forms part of a broader effort to strengthen skills, improve professional standards and support the structured development of the refrigeration and air-conditioning workforce in Burkina Faso.
The mission focused on assessing the capacities of training institutions active in refrigeration and air-conditioning, with particular attention to technical training, equipment, infrastructure and teaching resources. As part of the activities, the delegation visited the Lycée Professionnel National Maurice Yaméogo and the École Normale Supérieure de Koudougou, the Lycée Professionnel Régional du Centre and the Centre d’Évaluation et de Formation Professionnelle de Ouagadougou (CEFPO), as well as the Lycée Provincial de Bassy and the Centre de Formation Professionnelle Régional de Ziniaré.
The work concluded on 28 August 2026 with a restitution and exchange workshop chaired by Yasseya GANAME, Chargé de missions of the Ministry of Agriculture, Water, Animal and Fisheries Resources (MAERAH), in the presence of Maïmouna YAMPA, Director of Wastewater and Excreta Sanitation, representing the Director General for the Environment and Living Environment. The workshop brought together managers and trainers from specialised training centres, as well as key sector stakeholders.
The technical discussions were led by Saïd El Harch, UNEP expert trainer, who presented the orientations and mechanisms needed to establish a national certification framework adapted to the realities of Burkina Faso.
In the long term, this certification system will help recognise, harmonise and enhance the skills of refrigeration and air-conditioning technicians. It will also contribute to improving service quality, supporting the transition towards more environmentally friendly technologies, and reinforcing Burkina Faso’s commitments to ozone layer protection and greenhouse gas emission reduction.
